Torreyson Library Renovations - By Chrissy Karafit
Have you seen the new Torreyson Library? The library underwent a number of renovations over the summer to refresh the appearance and enhance student workspace. Purple, green and tan paint on first floor walls and pillars have added brightness and warmth to the computer labs and study areas. Computer labs have been reorganized into a more spacious area with easy access to printers. Additional print stations mean students spend less time waiting for their prints. Also, the new flooring has transformed the first floor into an open and inviting workspace.
The browsing area offers new and popular print and audio books for leisure reading as well as comfy furniture with a modern look. Wheeled, swiveling office chairs have replaced many of the stiff and uncomfortable wooden chairs in student work areas. Rocking chairs as well as cushioned booths and couches have created more comfortable spaces for study and leisure reading throughout the library.
And more improvements are in the works. The study carrels on the first floor are getting a new coat of paint—white board paint! Students can make notes, sketch out ideas or write the great American novel on white board walls.
Plans are underway to renovate the library bathrooms to update the appearance and improve accessibility. Renovations will also include the addition of family and unisex bathrooms and a nursing station for mothers.
The Academic Success Center is moving to the second floor of the library, and plans to begin operations in that location in the 2013 spring semester. To make room, we have already relocated the library’s current periodicals and browsing magazines to a more convenient location outside the administrative suite on the second floor. Soon the serials staff will also be stationed in this area to provide customer service. The microforms collection will relocate to the first floor next to Starbucks and government documents.
As you know, the library plans to extend operating hours to 24-hour access five days per week, starting Sunday, September 23. When the new extended hours begin, work will start on converting the former Night Owl Room into a quiet computer lab with daytime hours. Library faculty and staff are working hard around the clock to provide UCA students and faculty with top-notch information resources and services.
